How to construct a proper snow cave

Overnight Weekend: Saturday-Sunday, April 14-15, 2007

South Lake Tahoe/Heavenly Ski Area

This course in winter mountaineering, certified by the National Ski Patrol (Circle M), entails 8 hours of classroom on Sunday, March 25, 2007 at the El Dorado County Library in South Lake Tahoe and an overnight the weekend of April 14 and 15 in the backcountry near the Heavenly ski area.

Classroom topics will include

  • Equipment, clothing, and food for the winter backcountry
  • Map and compass
  • Travel on snow
  • Emergency shelters
  • Rescue transportation
  • Principles of search and rescue

At the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • Spend an unplanned overnight in the winter backcountry without being too uncomfortable or becoming a casualty
  • Function as an effective member of an off-area rescue team
  • Appreciate snow camping as a recreational activity.
