Ski patrol is a group of people that shares similar goals in a unique environment. As a patroller you will interface with nurses, physicians, EMTs, paramedics, firefighters and the Sheriff's department in a variety of situations. Recent articles have show that many skiers will never talk to a patroller except to ask directions or find out where the black diamond runs are. However, when an accident occurs, they are counting on your expertise to provide them with proper care. You should be prepared to deal with patients who are scared or in pain and be able to provide psychological relief. You will needto be prepared to handle any medical emergency including CPR. And you will develop good patient and customer care. On the lighter side, ski patrol offers a wonderful way to put back into a sport so much of what you got out of it. On one side, patrol offers a great way to increase your skiing , yet it also provides an opportunity to further your education in first aid, avalanche, mountain operations and resort management. National Ski Patrol offers many such educational programs including Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) refreshers, avalanche safety, skiing and mountaineering.
